Hello everybody! I'm a potential E34 buyer and I need some advice on a 92 525i automatic (i know...) I've been looking at. I haven't got a chance to test drive this yet, but let me know what you think? My budget isn't that great, but I think I can afford a rebuild of auto tranny.

Here are some details:

1. has 214,000 miles

2. recent rebuilt compressor, oil pan replaced, gasket replaced

3. 3 owners so far

4. excellent interior and exterior condition

5. auto tranny has NOT been rebuilt

6. car has been regularly maintained by import specialist, including 1 suspension service and one engine service (found from Carfax)

7. black exterior, tan interior, 6 cd changer, stock unmodified

8. car has failed emission test in california but has been able to pass later

$2500, maybe $2000 if the suspension needs work (be sure to get a trusted *bmw* mechanic to look at it, not the local GM wrench) ;)

best, whit

Sounds pretty iffy to me on too many levels -plus it's a 525 with a slushbox. You should keep shopping -there's got to be better/great deals to be had than this.

I believe that the '92 525i would have VANOS which mean substantially more power than earlier models of the the 525i.

92 525i in the us has no vanos. the peak power is dropped from 47xx to 42xx rpm in the vanos version. 93 on does.

A '92 525iA is a very nice ride! Thank You Very Much! :D

However, the one in question has some seriously high miles. Does the seller have complete service records?

Has the current owner owned the car for more than a year?

If the answer to either question is "no", I'd start thinking real hard about other options.

Is the current seller selling the car after a few months of owership due to family hardship, death, job change, weather change, etc...

If answer to this question is "yes" WALK AWAY, 'cause you don't want none of this!!!!
