I apologize in advance for being the new guy:
Just needed a little advice/info. Im currently in Sicily and was gonna buy a 1991 520i with 200,000km(125,000 mi). I'm pretty good with cars and was trying to find out specs, engine types, and your general impression on the vehicle. price is $3000. I have searched a few sites online and get mixed info on the engine m20 vs m50? any help would be great

there is another member here with an E34 in the board presently stationed in the military in Sicily.
Use the serach engine on top and type in
e34it
That is the nick of the member here. You can send him a PM or email when you open his personal data file.
He has some good sources and might be able to help you out.
Maybe you both do not live far away, but the connection is made via this board. ;)

If he's here he'll be close(might even be the guy selling it!)
Thanks!

$3000 seems high for what I expect a Euro 5er to cost these days. I think e34it is in Sicily -- you might PM him and see if he can offer any advice.

The M50 is a more technologically advanced design over the M20. Both have their quirks, but they say they're good for a few hundred thousand miles with the correct maintenance. It's not adviseable to buy an M20 without proof of when the timing belt has been changed...It's almost a better idea to have the thing towed home/to the mechanic's directly after paying for it if there's no record of it.

The vehicle is great, but you might find yourself wanting a bigger engine - perhaps a 535 or 530 (if they had the big six derivative in Italy...I don't know). As it's a european car, I bet it's a manual, which I would assume would make driving a 520 much more enjoyable.

best, whit
