Still working on the original manual tranny, previous owner overheated and cracked the head, so not sure whether I can claim an 'original' engine. Lots left to do, gotta get back and tinker with something,

Do you guys with the high mileage use the 5ers on the highway mostly? I use mine as a daily driver so I expect less mileage on mine before overhaul. I think the day to day stop and go driving is considered severe usage. Hence for stuff will break? Any thoughts?

The 86 Isuzu Trooper I bought has 304k (miles) on the odometer. In the year that I have owned it I have put less than 1k on it.

Engine and Tranny still origianl and awesome!! Uses about half a quart every oil change at 6k mile intervals.

I've installed:
Left Axle
Driveshaft
Thrust Arms
Sachs Kit
JC Chip
16 BBS's RS
Oil Pan Gasket
Water Pump
Main and Rod Bearings (Only because had the bottem end open for gasket replacement)
Rear Exhaust section
Swar Bar bushings and arms
And losts of little misc hardware.
Clutch Plate at 200k, still good
Valve cover gasket
Valve Eccentrics

I use mine as a daily driver in traffic and also go on many road trips. There is nothing like taking a road trip in the e34 it is a pleasure.
The only major stuff that needed replacing was the radiator/thermostat at 207k miles. and bushings and belts/hoses here and there. I always change the fluids so everything runs like new. I think it is time to overhaul the suspension though, because shes not as tight as she was.

I'm at 207K. Daily driver. Runs and looks great. I get lots of compliments on the looks and condition of mine. Beautiful here in N GA today. Changed oil. (I was several hundred miles past due). Going to have to tackle the radiator this spring. Slow leak appears to be gradually getting worse.

but, its no e34. I can't even imagine putting that kind of mileage on a car. Its just amazing how well they keep going. My 540 has more miles than anything I've ever had the guts or patience to hold on to with 111,000. Not even in the same mileage league. :)

Well Adrian,
For the first three years or so I did all hwy driving 150mi roundtrip to and from work. Keep valves adjusted, oil checked and engine blown out, at least once a week or more I drive the car around town in 3 (I have a auto) and let the engine breathe. I run castrol 10/30 but ran syntec for years. Change belt on M20 @ 60k and waterpump/thermostat and don't forget to flush your tranny every 30k and you should have high milage also. Most would cringe in horror as I only change my oil @ 6 to 7k intervals but I have 331k so I must be doing something right...........
