The part number for the 1995 540 shown on the Bavarian Autosport website is: 11 42 1 745 390, however the website has the following warning:

* Warning! Must check oil filter to see if it has metal ends or plastic ends

(near the bottom, next to the last item)

So what's the deal? Which is better, Metal, Plastic?

Also, is anyone using the Lubro Moly Voll-Synthese Motor Oil - Synthetic 5 Liters - 5W40 that they recommend?

Thanks,
Mike

there was 2 different oil filters on the early v8s, eventially bmw came up with a kit to convert them from one style to the other, the adaptor is this plastic thing that looks like some weird sex toy that plugs into the oil filter housing, it's a little bigger then a inch around and nearly as tall as the inside of the filter housing

the plastic end one is the common later style

Mike,
the metal end filter is the old style, plastic one is new style with the ribbed dildo (filter insert) that goes inside it so it dont collapse. If your not sure then just order the filter insert, they can get all messed up after a few oil changes anyways and only cost a couple bucks. Most people here use Mobil 1 0w-40 synthetic. Might want to check pricing against BMA auto, good guys and they usually get your order correct the first time too!
