i was certain up to about 20 minutes ago that my system was r134, until I saw my underhood sticker said r12, but i'm certain that I saw service records indicating a compressor replacement no earlier than 1996 or 1997...would somebody try to retain that stuff if the system was opened up during that time? is there a valve unique to 134 that i can use to rule out the presence of the 12 stuff? thanks.

the valves pretty much tell the story, R-12 is the small thread deal and the R-134 is the wider thicker thread model. That is entirely based on who and what they did when or when not retrofitting the refidgerant.

When I converted my 90 GMC 4x4 I simply evacuated changed the drier and added R-409a and didnt add any stickers cause they dont have freezer conversion stickers. If I would have changed the condensor I would have used 134 (not) to be EPA fluent. But since I used the r-12 condensor I used the 409a, have to overfill it so that the evaporator dont freeze humidity solid. Much colder than the 134 conversion and colder than r-12 but not exactly what was meant when they gave me the certificate on that subject.

doubt that tells your answer but might help, if they retrofitted there will usually be an adapter cap type valve that cannot be removed. If it looks like it makes the threads bigger than its r-134.

i deal with this all of the time, unfortunatly some people don't convert the car as it should be, i allways check the charge with a identfyer (about a $1100 toy from yokogawa) to protect the $4000+ ac machine from contamination, i see all kinds of stuff, r22, r134, propane and any combination there of with no labels or special fittings

409 409 409, colder than anything and not what i would suggest against my epa certification but I heard 409 works well. But I wouldnt personally know of course.
