I have a 60 gig HD with less than 10 gigs used, and yet I was advised to reformat and do a clean install anyway, even though XP upgrades the 2K OS without issues 99% of the time.
I am okay with this because I have all of my software legally, and most everything is burned and backed up.
However, I did rip about 40 cds that belong to friends to my media library, and they won't automatically convert (they are wpa or wma I forget) and let me burn them to disc, and thus I am at a crossroads.
Do I partition the HD and drag the music files over to the XP side, and then whack the 2K and defrag?
Do I reformat and whack the music and just borrow the cds again?
Do I buy some conversion software to dnld the music to and then upload it back on the reformatted system.
I'll hang up and listen.
not sure what the story is with how the wma files work, but if i were you (If i were REALLY you i'd leave windows 2000 on there and be greatful that I don't need to use that bloated xp mess), i'd use partition magic to create another partition non-destructively, install xp cleanly there, and see if the importation takes....its an easy matter to get rid of the 2k installation afterward.
You can run the upgrade; I've done upgrades on 175 machines here w/o any problems. Before you install it will scan the system to see if there is any software that isn't XP compat - please don't skip that (a few items aren't compat, like older versions of PCAnywhere).
If you want to go fresh create a new partition, dump your files on it, then do a reinstall.
I've had no problems with XP at this facility.
They're cross platform, if you can play them on W2k you can play them on XP. If memory serves me correctly it's up to the media player to take care of them, so if you upgrade to WMP9 and the new codecs you'll be ok.

I still stick with my old school 98se, have a second backup drive 80 gig for my music (3000+) and porn, also have every disk for programs stored in there. I have an extra backup HD 60 gig to facilitate transfering of important work files that I also backup here on the home pc. A while ago I went and upgraded (if thats what you call it) to win 2000 and hated it so much that I reverted back to this 98se deal was like tying a large carpet to the bumper on the E34.

I prefer Windows 2000 to Windows XP. It appears to me that Microsoft just put to much crap in XP. Lots on moniotring and extra bells and whistles that I really have no use for. I find Win2K is exceptionally stable and runs rings around and of the 9x series.

xp pro has many features that win2k adv srv
has and is faster
but yeah i'd keep the win 2k on there
or just buy another HD - they are REALLY
cheap - dvd burners i say wait til they
drop in price this summer.
200gb = 130 bucks or so
heheh u can have oh, maybe 5,000,000 songs
