I can't speak for that particular competition, since I'm in Georgia, and haven't heard of it, but I'm sure there are 100's of similar ones all across the country.
However, I do like singer/songwriter stuff, and the female voice. Carole King is probably my all-time favorite. For vocals, but I don't know if she ever penned a song, Linda Ronstadt, others would include Dolly, Gillian Welch, and lots of others.
I'll give it a listen and offer you some feedback.
My sister- in-law and her husband know a lot of "rock star" types. Both of Sheryl Crowe's guitarist, my sister-in-law had a girl band in the 80's, etc. etc.
