With Pheonix the site of several big collector car auctions each January—Barrett-Jackson, RM, Kruse, Russo & Steele—excitement in the area runs high. But this year, an auction held a couple of days before the Barrett-Jackson event, in a once-abandoned but now suddenly crowded Kmart store, provided a highlight all its own, and more than a little irony.
A court-appointed receiver assigned local auctioneer Cunningham & Associates with dispersal—and with no bothersome buyers’ premiums—of a yellow 2001 Ferrari 360 F1 Spider with a mere 363 miles on its odo, a red 1998 Lamborghini Diablo SV, a 2001 Bentley Arnage, five Mercedes, two Escalades and a Lincoln limo.
It’s no stretch to say these were muscle cars: The vehicles were forfeited in a fraud case involving the sale of what were purported to be penile-enhancement drugs on the Internet.
George Cunningham needed only 16 minutes to sell the 11 vehicles. The Bentley seemed a bargain at $145,000. The Lambo went for slightly less. The Ferrari—for which the original owners paid in excess of 300K—fetched $187,500.
After a hectic few minutes, it was all done. Cunningham was looking forward to spending the weekend at the Barrett-Jackson Auction, but only to look. “I don’t buy anything at auction,” he said. — LARRY EDSALL
