    Is coolant always needed???

May be somebody can explain to me why coolant is required on areas were the expected minimum temperature is way above water freezing point.

I have always understood that exceeding the 50% concentration of the coolant, will reduce the heat transfer capability, so it is a bad idea to put too much, then it shouldn’t be there to improve the cooling system ability to take out the heat of the motor. I’m sure it is required for anti freezing properties, maybe also for anti rust performance? Manuals suggest distilled water to be mixed with the coolant, this is to prevent rusting! Distilled water is non conductive, and electrical conductivity is the base of oxidation.

Then, can somebody explain to me: Why, even though I live in an area where there is not a chance of having the water inside my cooling system frozen, I shouldn’t fill the cooling system only with distilled water?

that's a hard to answer question, yes plane water is a better coolent then mix, but you get more then rust prevention with a mix, higher boiling point and lubracant for the water pump and i think theres a few others, id run at least a lean mix of a 1/3 green stuff and 2/3 water, i run a little under half and half in my cars and half and half in my customers cars

It is my understanding that coolant does more than just act as "anti-freeze".
It should act as a corrosion inhibitor, to protect the motor, radiator, hoses & some such.
There is also the consideration that coolant acts as a lubricant for the water pump.
I'd guess that coolant has additives to maintain a more desireable, stable pH level. There is evidence that the major cause of rubber hose breakdown is electrolytic, acting on the inside of the rubber to break the hose down.
