The operation of the roof has gone out about a year ago. I know that the motor is still working. Switch was tested ok. Someone told me that it could be the relay module for the roof. Does anyone know where this part is at? Any suggestions? Thanks.
I have '92 525iT, bought in 1997. 6 months into ownership something broke in the tracking mechanism. You could see the piece that had broken and when I took it to my local import guy, he thought there would be little problem in replacing it.
Then I got the bad news. BMW did not sell the individual part that had broken - only a whole new tracking mechanism. Translation: $1300 for the part!!
Then the real kicker - when the track comes in he calls me and tells me to come by the shop - he needs to show me something. Fearing the worst, I go anyway. He shows me the new tracking mechanism and guess what? BMW had changed the part that broke on mine. The new tracking mechanism had a MUCH beefier part than mine had!
I checked - no recalls issued. He told me he had heard from a fellow at the local body shop that many of these devices had failed. When I asked him why they had not issued a recall on these he said that probably since they did not sell many wagons they were not required to issue one by Uncle Sam since it was not a safety related issue. He said I was lucky it was BMW - that if it was a Big 3 car, they probably would not have even beefed up the replacement part!
Anyway, sounds like you only have an electrical problem at this point. Maybe your '93 already has the beefier part on the tracking mechanism - for your wallet's sake, I hope so!
Despite this early bad experience, I have nothing but praise for the rest of the car! It has truly been the best automobile I have ever owned. Besides comfort and performance - the mechanicals are easy for even an amateur like me thanks in large part to good engineering (Although all evidence seems indicate that the double sun-roof may have been designed during Oktoberfest!!)
Good luck!
I purchased a water damaged 525iT as a project car. After a year of work everything is repaired. My roof did not work either. The relay modules are located under the rear seat on the driver's side. They are in a black plastic box. The black one is the relay module and the green one is the central module relay. The difference is that the black one has all types of relays and the green one is a circuit card. Try fuse 12 or 15 in the engine compartment and then check all the fuses under the rear seat. Keep me informed.
