Default Question about lock rings on inner Axle flanges.

A friend and I are about to replace the seals and fluid in my differential, I noticed that the lock rings are installed in the differential right before the seal according to Bruno's site. My friend insists that the rings are installed on the flanges first before insterting into the differential. Can someone clarify this for me before we tackle the job? Thanks.

By the way we've just installed a brand new, not rebuilt, driveshaft assembly and the infamous Sachs Kit, speechless on the Sachs Kit, and reduced noise with the new driveshaft. Thanks BMA! Planning on two new axles in about a month, when I save some $$$$$s.

Thanks everyone in advance on the response.
