4 questions..traction control & tranny problem

I have 2 questions about my wife's 525it E34 touring wagon- one is it seems to be`stuck in the manual mode and won't go back to automatic.
And question #2 is how does the automatic traction control work? Is there an indicator light for it? How do you know if it works at all?
The reason I ask is that it really does lose control very easily and I'm very concerned about that.
