Default Does anybody have an E34 with ATF indicated on the power steering

reservoir? Just curious, as everybody seems to post that theirs either says CHF 11s or 7.1 and most of these cars do not have self-levelling suspension. The later cars, e38 and e39, do say ATF on the cap, when that is the chosen fluid.

If you do have ATF on the e34 cap, what year and model of car do you have? Do you know if the lid has ever been changed?

    Thanks,

My 10/'91 525i (German) has it. It looks like the original lid (it looks as old as the container )

Default Dick, my 89 535 had a sticker on the original reservoir that stated

Use only atf. I thought i posted the info already about atf and chf usage..maybe not. I'll find it and post it.

usa m20/m30s run atf in 91 they started with 7.1 on the m50s and i beleve all of the v8s run some sort of chf, i think it's fine to run atf if it doesn't have self leveling on any e34

    Bill,
does that mean that instead of Pentosin CHF 7.1 I can also use Pentosin CHF 11S, and / or mix both?
In my case it is a 750iL produced 11/88 VIN 3055570.
Sticker says 7.1 on my car.
It is not clear from that sheet.
On the other hand it says mixing of CHF, LHM and ATF is not permitted.
My old owners manual however says that in emergency I can top up with LHM.

Default I couldn't say Shogun, by my own interpretation I would say that

in my own case I would go from the oldest to the newest but not vice versa. In other words if i had a car that used chf7.1 I wouldn't hesitate to change it to 11 since thats the newer lower viscosity fluid but i wouldn't change a 11 car back to 7.. and again in my own case I don't think i would mix them , I'd try to empty out as much as possible and then convert... Where i live it rarely gets down to 25F but even a 32f my regular atf power steering pump makes some noise on startup...If i lived somewhere where it got down to 0F and colder I would probably convert my car to chf 11 since thats intended for the colder climates anyway.

    Default Yes ATF 95 525i built 1/95

Somewhere on the cap it stated ATF and I doubt if the cap had been replaced by the PO.

I replaced the fluid in my power steering aboout a year ago with Mobil 1 Dextron III synthetic ATF. It was dark brown, now it it red.

I did it the hard way. I uses a turkey baster to suck the fluid out of the reservior over and over and over until it was red. I used about 3-4 quarts..
