Default Ed, ya may want to exchange the mz3 shifter for the z8 shifter, if convenient.

I just finished replacing the mz3 shifter with a new z8 shifter. The z8 shifter is kinda clunky, with a long throw, but it is has a much easier action. Is is also bent slighty back, towards the handbrack. The mz3 shifter is straight. There is no more jamming things around to get into first. The mz3 shifter was just too long below the pivot to provide a smooth shift. I suspect that bending the lower shift rod would help with this shifter. The bending would involve a bench vise and a few impact sockets. The idea is to bend the rod while keeping the ends parallel & in plane. This would also help with the awkward reach given by this shifter.

I put the early 320i gearbox mounts on my car this morning. I had to drill out the holes in the lower brackit a scooch. The mounts are much beefier, without the hourglass shape. They are firmer, but I moticed "Meyle" stampings, fudge.

Thanks for the info Martin. The Z3 shifter is already on the way. It was an inexpensive change and I'm afraind the Z8 shifter would be much more expensive. Not sure though. I paid $40 for the brand new Z3 shifter from BMA.

The bending mod seems interesting. I'll have to investigate once the shifter arrives.

Yeah, the gearbox mount upgrade sounds very interesting. I forgot to order new ones but can prolly just go to the local dealer and take a look see at those 3 series mounts.

Z8 shifter's $50 or so. Got's one. Much better than Martin's old Z3 (which is why he switched as well). Maybe Pat'll swap it for ya?

I'm having a tough time with the long throws of the z8 shifter.

I'm thinking about bending a "spare" lower linkage & retrying the notchmeister. Guess I should get to work on building a workbench to mount a big vise.

Now Martin is saying he does not like the long throws on the Z8. I guess I'll take a look at the Z3 shifter when it comes it, and decide then. You're right, Pat would likely take care of exchanging them. Or I could always use this Z3 shifter in the other 535! choices!

I agree about the Z3 shifter that there is too much below. I use the e39M5/e46 M3 one in my car and I wanted a moderate length below while still haveing a taller length up top for better leverage and easier reach. It works great, but I am probably going to bend the selector rod or the lever for a better angle. The lever isn't as short as an e36 M3 one, but it is such an improvement over stock.

Ed, what kind of tranny fluid do you have in your tranny?

    Default Redline.

Synthetic Redline. A tad notchy with it, but much better than what ever was in there originally. Now that the tranny is out, I will likely change it again. Just cause I can!
