Default what a broken timing chain can damage

Look at these pics of an 740 E32 V8 engine, only 184K KM

see the pics of the bended valves

Engine was completely overhauled now and runs again.

Default looks like they didn't change the oil............

the inside of my engine looks extremly clean even though it has over 150,000miles on it. that chain does not look to good.

Default Never, under normal use you shouldn't ever need to replace it...

I recently helped my friend put his E46 330ci SuperCharged back together when his oil pump nut failed, starving the top end of oil, cause the VANOS timing gears to jam up, snapping the VANOS chain, shooting it through the crankcase and AC condenser.... if I have the pics on my server I will link them later. When he got home he called me and told me there was something wrong with the timing and the oil pressure gauge was at 0, I asked him if there were any visible holes in the front of the motor, he said no. Then he realized there was a "bicycle chain hanging from the crankcase". Yes boys it does happen. WELD YOUR OIL PUMP NUTS!

Was that caused from the oil pump falling off or what? Definetly looks like an oil related issue with the bearings but what the hell caused the chain to snap?
