    Default 94 740, what cd changer?

    I'm asking this for a friend who has a 94 740 (7 digits of VIN- DE65851.) He has the wiring for the cd changer, but I was wondering which models would work. Part numbers would be great if anyone has them. Or if anyone knows if some of the cd changers are interchangeable, that would be helpful too. Thanks!

    Thanks Shogun. I was under the impression that since his car is prewired for cd changer, that it could be controlled through the stock headunit. Are you saying that this is not the case?

    Default Mike, I am really not good at audio questions

    Maybe someone else can help. There are some experts on the E34 board here. I guess they can answer more in detail, as the E34 and e32 have much in common in parts and systems.
    Another possibility is to check on a special BMW audio forum like this one

    Mike,
    Not sure if the head unit is the same as my 5'er, but I went to the BMW dealer parts dept. and a very nice parts guy dug up some documentation indicating which BMW CD changers worked with my 1990 535i. This helped confirm which changer I went after while shopping on Ebay. If it is a Pioneer head unit, then it is possible that the after market Pioneer CDX-M30 might work (often available on Ebay), but he might need the special BMW PIO adapter if plugging into a 14 pin round connector.
    This link was helpful in sorting out what works with what head units in the 5'er, maybe it'll help you. http://www.unofficialbmw.com/all/ste...nger_info.html

    You can find out which head unit he has by turning the radio on...then similtaneously pushing the PROG and " - " (MODE ) button. The head unit's brand will illuminate in the radio display (ALPINE 1,2,3,4,5) or PIONEER 1,2,3,4) etc. With most Alpine/Pioneer head units...you'll be able to use any of the 6 CD changers that was used in the 1991-up e36/e34/e32. The Alpine 5 & Pioneer 4 units are slightly different and need a more specific changer unit. Also, be careful in your searching because many of the changers look alike but are only compatible with M-Bus and I-Bus head units...which is not compatible in your 1994 e32. These are units that were used in the e38/e39/e46.

    I'm not an expert...but this is the little info I know about CD changers & head units. You may be able to find more specific info if you do a search using various "keywords" to find details from past postings.

    You can also get part number info for the Alpine & Pioneer CD changer from the online parts database...I entered info for a generic 1994 740iL...you can start over and enter the VIN from your friends car if you like..but here's the link...just scroll down to the appropriate brand/changer for its part number and click the diagram to get the exploded view with part number index: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/partgrp.d...00&hg=65&fg=95

    Good luck.

    Mike,
    I have a Pioneer CD Changer that came out of my 98 740iL that is compatible with the 97 too. It was bought new from Claridges BMW in Hayward CA in Dec 2000 for my then new to me 98. I have since upgraded to a Nav system out of a 2000 so I needed the newer model CD CHanger to be compatible with that radio system. Let me know;

    BMW Part no: 65-12-8-361-058.
