I dont think there is enough clearance on the E34 for chains, Im sure I read this somewhere...I'll see if I have anything bookmarked for you.

Chains are against the law here in Minnesota, Blizzaks work real good, though.

Default Page 94 of your BMW owners manual states:

Use only snow chains* according to SAE J 1232 classification "S". The snow chains may be used on drive wheels (rear) only.

    Do not exceed 30 MPH (50 km/h).

    Page 103 states:

We recommend the exclusive use of BMW snow chains.

So theres the official answer for you.

I do not believe that chains are legal in most places these days. The main roads should be just fine, are you going to be up in the mountains or traveling on back roads? Just take it easy and hope for warm weather. All seasons are not ideal for snow and ice but if you take it easy and there are not any big storms you will be just fine. I am heading south for Christmas, if you want to swing by Boston you can borrow my Blizzaks for a few days.

    Best,
    Rory

Snow chains are illegal here in Vermont. They rip up the road too much. Just get some good snow tires.
