I think a straight-up 5-speed swap might not even need a visit to OH. Maybe my local guy that works for $50-ish/hour could do it . . .

Wrong tranny, but about 2 weeks ago, the tranny on my former 525iT went out. I've avoided talking to anyone bimmer related for a while, I had this though of buying the car back (sold it to my neice's fiancee) and sending it out to Brett Anderson. I really didn't need any of you merry band of misfits convincing me that it would be a great idea!!!
