It is not synthetic. I have the same tranny in my 2, 1991 525i (made by GM) as your car, and Dexron III is what I have been using for years.

I was also wondering if there's any major difference between Dexron ii and Dexron iii. Can I use the iii. Is it synthetic? Thanks for the help. I've never done a tranny flush. Seems like the previous owner hasn't either.

Dexron iii has a higher temperature rating than Dexron ii. Dexron iii can be used in Dexron ii systems, but Dexron ii should not be used in Dexron iii systems. Here is a link that might be useful, it is the exact A/T on my 92 525ia.
