I would never drive on the snow with a BMW without proper tire....
I crashed my E34 in these conditions.
Be very careful.
oh man, today was the first time i ever drove on snow.
we got about an inch or two out here in Hillsboro, Oregon. my 95 525i didn't do too great. it's rear wheel drive so i was expecting some problems, but i was fish tailing at like 5-10 miles an hour if i stepped on the brakes just a tad too hard. i have a feeling my tires aren't all-season (checking tomorrow, and possibly replacing for the future)........
on the roads where a lot of cars have already driven, i didn't have problem going about 30-35, the only thing was braking - tap a bit too hard and i was skidding, so i ahd to let go of the brake and try it again.
but on the roads with fresh snow where there haven't been many cars, at like 10 miles an hour if i stepped on the gas or brake too sudden i would start swerving. wow it sucked. i ended up hitting a curb of the side walk at like 2 mph (only the tire, so nothing bad). i hope it sticks so i can go out into some empty parking lot and practice!

yep, i think i learned my lesson this way. just checked the tires, too. EX-601 - summer tires .
now i gotta go out and buy some all-season.
dont buy all seasons, get some winter only tires/wheels, and switch back to your summers in the spring. All seasons are a compromise, you really need a dedicated winter tyre. I had some all seasons that I used last year, I hated them in the snow. Got some Borbets with Perilli 210s I bought off daBay, some to install them this weekend.
