if you are looking to silence yer valvetrain, i'd suggest you stay away from the 0w40 weight for the time being, and that you try out various brands of conventional w40 weights to see which one quiets things down the best. as seen here

mobil 1 0w40 is a very thin 40 weight, as shown above. i only suggest that you be more contemplative about it because i know how hard stuff like that is to get in canadia ,( expensive too) and i wouldn't want you to waste money and go out of your way to get something that doesn't get the job done. the mobil 1 5w40 is thicker:

but i'm sure you'd have a hell of a time getting that up there if you have trouble finding the 0w40. i looked at bobistheoilguy.com for a virgin oil analysis of mobil 1 10w40, but couldn't find any (must not get much play in the US market). you could probably buy a fancy boutique french oil like motul in canada for near the same price as the rarer mobils. me, i know that my vehicle runs well NVH wise with a moderate weight 40 oil, so i might either try to use a real thin cheapie oil with visc. close to m1 0w40 to see if it would work. if it doesn't, ill just bite the bullet and pay the $1 premium a bottle for the 5w40.

Default Ryan , his problem isn't that the oil is too thin, its that it takes too

long to get to the hydraulic valve adjusters on a cold start. 0w40 would work better in this case.

Default Bentley doesn't suggest it because it wasn't out when the bentley was published.

This to me seems like a bandaid solution since Bently does not recomend runing this wide a range of viscosity,....but whatever works i guess. it's cheaper to change the oil and filter than to change the oil pump...for people not familiar with the E36, one side of the M50 Engine needs to be lifted to remove the oil pan. what a fun weekend that would be Aye

wasn't trying to be an idiot, bill. when i was there in may, it was easier to get lubromoly vol synthesse than it is to get the 0w40. if i lived there, i might just buy oil from the dealer, m1 is about 30 CDN dollars for less than 5 quarts in a jug, IIRC. walmart canada and canadian tire has the 5w and 10w30 , but pretty much nothing else, was just trying to save him a headache, didn't consider that it was just making noise at startup.
