take it to an AC guy :-)
First check to see if it needs a charge. If not, bend over :-)

George - Are you right! Go to someone, get a free diagnostic and if it needs a re-charge, go get a kit from NAPA.

kidding a bit Marc since no info was provided in the initial post. You can first check the spy glass under the plastic trim by removing the thumb screws on the passenger side over and above hooking up gauges to see what the pressures are. The AC systems...like many other facets of these cars are quite robust...mine is all original on my 150k mile car...still R-12...car sits alot and hasn't been charged in 6 years of ownership....amazing.

George - Mine's a 1992 with 190,000KMs with the original gas still in system and cold. Blower's a little weak, but hey, you only need it here two months of the year!

    Incantation,
Unless your AC system has been retrofitted with R134a you will have to have a qualified shop recharge your R12. If it was retrofitted to 134 you can get a kit with a guage and refill it yourself. It is very easy.
This spring I had my 535i recharged with R12, needed about 2 1/2 pounds and cost a bit over $100. Try to find a good indy shop to do it, they're much cheaper.
    Good luck.

Sort of off topic but maybe i can bring this up now ; My 1990 535iA has a problem with the A/C Compressor, intermittently the clutch bearing(?) will kinda lock up making the belt squeel real badly - Anybody been up this road? Can I have the compressor rebuilt or look for a new one?

    Its a 1990 535iA
