Default where is the gearing/ID tag located on differential....

is it on the bottom, or one of the sides? i looked on the bottom, but couldn't see it. there is grease buildup, though. can anyone advise me before i take another look?

It should be on the base of the driver's side axle, where it meets the diff. It's more visible when you roll under with a creeper from the rear, feet first. The little metal tag should be visible despite grease, but you'll need to wipe it off and use a flash light to read it or at least look for the S, which is probably what you're hoping to find.

thanks...will go back out when the sun calms down a wee bit, take a dig. pic of the tag, and see what ZF has to say about it.

Hehe... yeah, the first time I had my car on stands I rolled under the diff looking for that little S... my 525i didn't have one unfortunately (I'm not sure how they were divied out in 95') but the 535i does, much to my delight.
