    Default Noise from motor. Vanos?

Got a '94 525. When the engine is warm there's a mechanical sound from the Vanos area that sounds like it has something to do with the timing chain. Every now and then it stops when idling but then comes back. Is this the Vanos noise?

sometimes you get some chain/tensioner noise out of m50s, i've never figured out the "vanos rattle" theres nothing to rattle with the vanos unit, it's just a bearing and piston
all america wants is cold beer warm cat and a place to take a poop with a door on it

the vanos unit can pick up slight play. I had this problem and BMW has a "kit" out that includes a few washers that just remove any excess play, thus quieting the vanos unit. Worked great for me

Default I've seen someone post this answer before, but with no reference to part numbers...

Do you happen to have any part numbers for this "kit"? My Vanos has been growling for 2 years now.

the part numbers are as follows : 11361403824 stud, 11361403822 disk, 11361403823 disk, 361403550 diaphragm spring. Please note these numbers are as supplied by BMW South Africa. I sure hope this assists you.

I must admit when u see the parts, all 4 of them, and so damn small, u wonder just what justifies their price.

    Take care

That's exactly what I was looking for. Bill R., have you seen this before? Looks like a thrust-type rebuild kit for the Vanos, to keep it from rattling back and forth in below-engagement speeds...

    Whatcha think?

Default Thanks for the picture and P/N's. Is it easy to figure out installation?

The Parts are called out in the list but not placed in the diagram.

I put in 12/95 as build date, and here's what comes up:

    later model vanos kit

Would any veteran M50 guys take a gander and comment on whether you've seen this setup before? It looks like it adds 4mm of thrust washer, and a diaphragm spring between the two thrust washers. Wonder how it looks assembled? Anyone have pics of a later model M50 (late '95 build) head in the VANOS area?

    Might be worth investigating...
