Default Noise from the Engine maybe?

    Hi All,

I get this strange noise from my 1999 323i. From the front,

    Its like rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr or eeeeeeeeeeehhhhhh..

At low speeds 10-20 miles. When I step on the gas.
It might be there at high speeds too, but I can't say due to the other noises.

Its clear and distinct. And lasts any where between 2 secs to 5 secs. I take my foot off the Gas it goes away.

I sometimes feel it comes from the front passenger side wheel, but I could be wrong.
I thought it was the Fan hitting the shroud, but that was not the case.

I'll try and record the sound.

    Any pointers / ideas.

    Thanks,
    Chris

Could it be a belt tensioner? or a belt pulley?

If there isn't any noises when you putt the foot off the gas, I would think that it isn't something to do whith the wheels.

Can you recreate the same noise while accelerating with the car parked???

I have my mech look at the Belt Tensioner and the pully.

Yep I can recreate the noise when I start from Stop. But when the car is neutral and stopped and I step on the Gas there is no problem. It comes only when the Car is moving.

Another thing.. the noise is like a airplane Drone, like a Single engine Prop plane, only the pitch is higher.

It come between 0 to 5 and 5 to 10 mph. when the Engine RMP is like 2000 or so.
