    Default m40 valve stem oil seals replacement

    Hey guys, does anybody know how to replace worn valve stem oil seals on a 518i m40 cylinder head? and what tools is needed etc

    Generically speaking... as I did it on MB.

    1. Air compressor with spark plug adapter to keep the valve up while removing the spring.
    2. Spring compressor
    3. Magnet
    4. Assortment of pliers
    5. Hammer

    You really do need a service manual to quide you through this.... assuming you are not removing the cylinder head. Sometime it is not just the seal that needs to be replaced... but the whole valve stem is loose.

    Make sure the piston is all the way up before you try to compress the spring. Old days I saw a guy try it and dropped a valve completely into the cylinder because the air pushed the piston to the bottom.
