    Default Diff Question

    Hi guys

    Hi

Im wanting to put a LSD portion from an E36 diff into an E34 diff casing. I know this will work as the gear sets are both type 188.

I would like to know how to measure so I can work out which spacer rings i need to use...

because you get two different sizes

    SPACER RINGS SET 1,45MM-1,69MM 33139065734
    SPACER RINGS SET 1,72MM-1,96MM 33139065735
I've not done this before, but suspect you need to measure them to see what fits best- the castings vary; i.e. perhaps they make up for the tolerances involved?

it's doable but I wouldn't bother. To completely start fresh will consume a lot of time and effort and still probably be on the questionable side of accurate.

You would be much farther ahead to just buy an LSD pig with the gears you want.

Advice contrary aside: As for measuring you need dial indicators and either machinests blue or gear compound (draws a blank on name). The ring gear lash should pretty much be around .004-.006 (ENG not metric) for that size gear.

Your going to need to study the correct lash patterns in order to do the side and pinion shim deal. This is where things can get pretty confusing, you need preload on all bearings within tolerance or they will fail. Then you need to rotate with gear compound to see where your at as in the pattern however you also need to have load on the ring gear to get the correct reading.

I could type a lot more but chose not to, as stated above it would be much easier to buy what you need in the first place. Last time I checked a price on this setup stuff it was around 800.00 US FRN not counting supplies. That was also for a simple chevy type unit, the BMW/ford pig would undoubtedly cost a few FRN's more.
