    Default 5HP30 Valve body rebuild

I definitely want to replace the check balls in my valve body, though I'm hesitant to spend so much on a kit if it's solely to replace 2 check balls - you can purchase suitable .25" balls from McMaster.

Has anyone done the kit rebuild and found the various gaskets, o-rings, and springs to be worn or was it simply these check balls that required attention?

Is a valve body rebuild kit for the 5HP30 with 160 $ too expensive?
    Definitely not.
When you ever have replaced a valve body kit, you will never again think about saving $ by replacing just 2 balls.
To get to the balls, you have to disassemble the valve body!
Do you think yoy can re-use baked on gaskets?

At 150K it's a good time to overhaul the entire valve body, IMO. The various valves and springs do develop wear and can produce erratic shifts, which (again IMO) subjects the powertrain to unnecessary stress. As Shogun said, the major gaskets also get brittle from heat and will need to be replaced.

With all the great step-by-step writeups available , it's not that tough a job, just tedious and kind of messy. And yes, the check balls are buried deep in the valve body. Once you set out to do the job, there's no point in doing it halfway.

I have done a valve body rebuild with alot of parts. I have to say honestly, if you have no shift issues, don't do it, the difference is negliable. If you have a transmission with some miles on it, go for a full rebuild.

The best way to go is let a shop rebuild your VB. The only way to know if something is bad, is a proper pressure test bench which we as hobbyists don't have. Trust me, I can do this myself no prob but if I look at the hours I spent, part costs etc., next time, I will drop my VB at a specialist or just buy a BRAND NEW ONE from ZF.

Only exception is the 5HP30 check ball fix since this is a known issue.
