Default remove hood when replacing water pump on m60?

Last time I replaced my water pump was when I was also replacing my intake gaskets and it was a good recommendation to remove the hood of the car for easy access. But now I'm just doing the water pump/thermostat and am wondering if I should or need to take the hood off for this job or not-- I'm leaning on doing it just for the ease of access to the working area from the front of the car but I'm curious what others have done. Its not specifically mentioned in the few threads with procedural details on the water pump-- most of those focus on the 'jesus bolt' for the water pump.
