This is great! Hmmmm, but what about the newer style that doesn't have removable pipes? Seems like those might be a little trickier since you have to pull out the core and the pipes at the same time. Or is that only with the E34?

Not sure about the E34, on E32 they are all separated, that means the heater core and the connection pipes.
I recently ordered from Autohaus Arizona for 2 E34 M5 heater cores and checked with my dealer before, he even checked with BMW Munich parts department. In the end both were separate, heater core and the 3-connection pipe piece.
So far I have only changed them on E32, no own experience with E34.
On E32 without aircon it is even easier to change the heater core, the system is horizontal and can be changed within half an hour. I posted an instruction on the German 7-forum back in 2006 for this

Shogun do these instruction apply to my sons 1991 735i? If so this is great.

I have repaired my 89 535i and it was a pain to get to. Had to remove the center console and a lot of junk to get it out. I replaced the orings hoping that would work but it appears it is still leaking a little, so I will have to remove the core and replace it. I think I will leave the console out for a while and drive it around to make sure i have no leaks.
