I believe there is a coding plug in the brown plug which connects to the back of the instument cluster. The Bentley manual mentions it. I haven't fixed it on my 1989 525i yet. Let us know if this is so and details on parts and installation.

Very straight forward, on the older cars the plug was attached to the connector, on "newer" ones it was directly at the back of the cluster.Originally Posted by uscharalph

I did a swap in my old 535i before I sold it, I popped a 23 000km plug in it hehehe (the new owner knew).

You will need a whole new cluster. I've done the change on mine. Is yours an auto or manual? I can help if its a manual. Otherwise there are plenty of autos in wreckers in Brisbane. Best try is KMJ, they have a 90 535ia there.

Yes i think im going to lean towards changing the whole cluster out with the blue/white backed one.
