    Default Gearbox Fault. 1994 - E34 520i 24v

    Hi guys,

    Can anybody help? I have got a 1994 (M-reg) 520i 24v.

I changed gear yesterday from 1st to 2nd and it was like i'd put the car in neutral. Since then i have had no 2nd gear. I have to rev the b**ls of it in 1st to get enough speed to go straight into 3rd.

All other gears are fine and there is no grinding or anything like that. I've not had any previous problems with the gearbox and the rest all change smoothly.

I can actually come to a halt in 2nd gear without the car stalling. (like neutral)

    Any suggestions welcome.

    Thanks
    Matt

It sounds like you've lost or blown 2nd gear, as you said that all the others work. That gearbox is going to have to come out.....

I second that. It's most likely your transmission blew second so buying a used transmission will probably be cheaper.

    Default 2nd gear out?

You sure its def the box and not the linkage? I'm guessing this is what yours looks like:

I didn't see that he had a manual...woops. It could be linkage or something else if it's a manual.

I saw it was a manual, but as Matt says, his forks are picking up all the other gears, which means the linkage is still lined up, so we all know what means.....

I dont see second gear just disappearing without a bang of protest. Sounds like he is selecting 2nd and getting fresh air.

I would have thought it would have went 'bang' too, but Matt never said that in his post. I guess we'll have to wait for him to reply to tell us more about it....

    Hi

Nope, there was no bang heard, i just popped into second and the rev counter just flew up when i put my foot down.

It is like putting it into fresh air! I can put it into second and free-roll it - like neutral.

If it was a full gearbox fault - wouldn't all the gears be f****d?

Nope, you can lose a single gear and the rest will work tickidy boo. I've lost a gear on a vw gearbox while cruising on the highway, no noise, no other symptoms, just air. When was the fluid last changed/checked? I ask as low fluid can toast gears.

If you want to rule out the linkage, you'll need to down there and manually try and engage the gear.
