Default fusible link - am i missing something?

i'm chasing gremlins - going to replace the battery terminals and was trying to figure out what goes where from the positive terminal.

i'm looking at bmwe34.net on that temporary server http://gator482.hostgator.com/~bruno...age=Electrical and i don't have the same thing as the 525 pictured... can someone tell me if this first photo is my fusible link the 80A one? and is that the only one? i get the feeeling i'm missing something somewhere.

Neither pic looks like fusible link on either of our '89 525s. FL is in front of the shock tower in an easily recognizable assemble that can be opened for easy access/replacement. One of our cars has had two failed FLs. Carry spares inglove box. Less a dollar at dealer.

For later MY E34's carrying a spare fusable link is not feasible, unless you have access to AC power to solder. The link is located next to the battery below the rear seat cushion.

Factory connection of fusible link under backseat appears to be riveted. I would consider nuts and bolts to go through the original rivets to hold the link from the engine bay setup.

Apearance is deceiving. I have replaced one on my 95. It is riveted allright. But the electrical connectors are riveted in the facotry so what does that tell you? Solder iron.

I have always figured if my FL went in the middle of nowhere it would be alright to just splice the leads together and hope i don't get struck by lightning on the way home... but i think i'll get one and see if it matches up anyway.

I suspected trouble with the link on one of my cars. It was intermittant and as it turned out not the link, but...I wired an inline fuse holder parallel to the link and put fuses in the glove box in case.
I'd be reluctant to eliminate the fuse in case it blows for good reason. Short a car battery with a #10 wire and see how long it takes to catch fire.

anyone know what the fuse rating is? Might be a worthwhile preventative measure to replace it with an anl or mini anl fuse and just carry a spare
