I didn't think the 540 AC compressor clutch is any different from that on the 525, or 535 for that matter. One shot of the air impact with a 13 mm socket if I remember correctly and a pair of snap ring pliers you can remove the clutch. Fleasbay?

    Default 540 A/c Compressor clutch

Hey guys, My dads 540i's compressor clutch took a **** the other day. We thought the valve train was shot, but turns out, the compressor clutch was burning up and smelled like burnt plastic and clutch. When we were looking, the clutch was trying to turn (was turning extremely slow) then nothing at all. The funny thing is that the a/c button wasn't even on!

What I am wondering is does anyone know where you can find a new clutch for it? He didn't really want to spend 300 bucks for a new compressor if only the clutch has failed. Rock auto had one, but they ended up calling him and cancelling the order because they can't get it. Why they listed it and then turns out they can't get it is beyond me but anyways. I called bma they cant get one, neither can autohaus and pelican parts doesn't list it. Any info would be appreciated.

    Thanks a bunch guys.

I have looked on fleabay and cant seem to find anything just pertaining to the ac clutch, everyone wants to sell the whole compressor. As for interchangeability, I have no idea. Thanks for the info!

Try this site. I cannot vouch for them personally but I had considered buying a compressor from them when I had my 530i.

I just need the clutch, the compressor is fine. I would rather not open up the a/c system and have to pay for refrigerant and all the neccesary components. The compressor is fine, the clutch just went south.

    FYI
The compressor is a Nippon Denso 10PA17C.
About a year ago, priced a clutch on fleabay for about $80. Used fleabay compressor with clutch was $150.

Well looks like I found one on amazon.com amazingly. 142 bucks. I was thinkin of going with a whole compressor, but since I found a new clutch, I would just assume go that route rather than buying a used one. Thanks guys.
