Drives fine in M but not in A

My '92 525i drives fine in the "M" position but not in "A". Could the transmission itself be O.K. and the problem lie with some other component? Or, could the tranny still be shot and need rebuilding/replacing. Reverse works fine in either A or M. Please advise. Thanks.

Try removing and cleaning the switch.
