Above URL I recently posted may be the easiest way to plug the heater core. If you only put a shutoff valve on the aux water pump end, namely the inlet side of the heater core, you will cut off circulation. However, you won't prevent pressure from going into the heater core and leaky pipe through the outlet hose. The outlet hose is part of the 3-way hose connecting up to the expansion tank. That pressure will continue to cause your heater core/pipe to leak.
I am in the Bay Area and lately it is cold enough that I don't want to drive in my 750 without heat. So my heater core/pipe replacement project should embark soon. But if you really think your area is warm enough all you need are two 3/4 inch machined plugs or socket cap bolts.
Lastly I would still urge you to renew the 10-inch long3/4 inch ID hose coming out of the engine because that hose if original can become pretty weak by now. So is the three way hose and the 8-foot long plastic pipe that wrap around the engine bay.
