    Default another dumb m30 question?

why can't you use a e34 m5 4v head on the m30b35 block? This was discussed a while ago, but i couldn't find the thread when searching for it.

however i've chatted to at least one gentleman who has done it.

Although, most people you ask about something non-traditional will say it can't be done... and often it CAN be done with a little effort. I say go for it!!!

Well it'd require new pistons, probably machining the block surface and I don't think the coolant passages are at all the same on the S38 vs M30 block, and I think you'd need to figure something out for the front timing chain as its a dual row timing chain.

Not to mention you'd have to acquire the head (unless you just happen to have it sitting around). Have you seen the prices of those heads lately? Ouch.

tell us why!I think the more modern head will ive the M30 a new lease of life.I drove a E39 540 six speed the other day and his fuel conumption figures were considerably better than the M30.....Half of that must be the more modern plumbing..the other half more modern injection systems...

That was the thread I was thinking about. I was told of course the pistons need to be recessed to accept the four valves and the m5 crankshaft needs to be used, that an one oil return from the head need to be changed. Jon the timing chain I don't know about
