I`me afraid that the route was not safe and the organisers could not insure against a smart-alec lawyer suing for negligence. You could argue that the litiiginous society or Al-Queda are equally responible. Having done it in the eighties I can attest that there is no harder test of man,machine and luck! I still have nightmares about the word "Barcan",getting a 6x6 MAN over an 80` one is a real trial! A lot of people will miss the ultimate test, sad.

its all very well to blame the lawyers
the truth is **** has and does happen on the dakar, a no. of the participants were hijacked a few years back. and they had to transport the whole rally to the other end of mauritania because of it. I suppose getting the military transport planes they used is cheap?
