The reset tool is just to reset the warning light but not to diagnose. If you do not solve the problem, light comes on again.
The E36 started flashing the SRS dash light. It blinks for about 5 minutes then goes to solid on. Searching (and checking the Bentley), it looks like this can only be reset with the special tool the stealer and some indys have. But is there any way to t-shoot what caused it? Looks like the seat belt switch is the most likely culprit, but how can I find out -without paying someone...
Doesn't seem to be as big an issue on the E34's, but the knowledge on this board is so vast I'm sure that it spills into the E36 realm.

Just to close this out, problem was the slip ring behind the air bag unit... Replaced, reset, good to go!
