Default Crankshaft pulley different in m50s? (car not starting)

OK, if anyone remembers, i was replacing the harness and computer in my m50tu. I finally got the right computer and the right harness. The fuel pump works, the starter cranks and there is spark from the coils. But the car does not start after being cranked repeatedly. It just kind of makes a soft thump noise.
Now it has been suggested that the ignition timing is wrong because the crankshaft pulley is different on vanos and non vanos engines. You know the thing that the camshaft position sensor is near. The parts numbers on OEM are different too, but after going to the junkyard, the grooves on both pulley look exactly the same.
So the question is, will the crankshaft pulley be responsible for the car not starting and will putting another one on solve this? If not, what else could affect the ignition timing, given that the car ran fine with the nonvanos harness and computer before?

The groves will look exactly the same. HOWEVER, find the TDC mark on the pulleys and put them each at STRAIGHT UP. You will see the gap in the teeth on an non vanos is about 16 teeth to the RIGHT of straight up and the vanos wheel is about 10 teeth to the LEFT of straight up. The Vanos vs Non vanos are about 120 degrees away from each other based on the pulley. You need the crank wheel for whatever ECU you are trying to use.

Changed the pulley and it works! Thanks so much, this car has been sitting for 3 weeks not running.
