Is THAT what those are? Every summer we used to spend a couple weeks on Cape Cod, those fences were everywhere. I always figured they were to keep people off private beaches.

Why would you need a snow fence at a beach?

They're trying to keep the snow on the beach instead of allowing it to drift inland. Open water is going to be warmer than the air, so a snowstorm passing over it will be more intense than one in the middle of Utah. I figure these would be common on the south and east shores of the great lakes with all the lake-effect snows. We just have them on the sides of roads so they don't get impassible as quickly

They "capture" the blowing snow so it doesn't drift across the roads as much.

We get some pretty strong winds off the lake at times. Even in the Summer, after a strong storm, I have even seen sand blown into drifts just like the snow. "Mini Dunes." Then the county has to bring out the front-end loaders to scoop it up and make the roads passable again.

A friend has a beach house near Bridgeman, just n of a nuke plant. Very nice beach. I can attest to the shifting dunes.

I'm about 90 miles north of your friends place.

I always carry my map with me.

    ahhh yes.
fun times in saskatchewan, i had forgotten about snow fences. they invariably become broken in places, yielding "pickets" half their size, perfect for teh elementary students to pull out and play "guns" with. that, or having a really refined "stick" compared to a branch to walk home with and toss into the street when one arrived.
