Default Transmission Slipping out of gear

    1990 535
    Manual Transmission
    Shift Kit
    120,000 miles

Recently, the transmission jumps out of first gear. If I shift 1 to 2 and back a few times, it almost always works. Thinking it is shifting fork.
What are my options? Used, rebuilt, transmission shop, etc.

    Is it jumping violently?

Get the transmission oil changed for a good quality well known brand, and see if it keeps doing it.

If it keeps doing it it's probably the synchromesh on first has collapsed...

Also make sure engine and transmission mounts are good - excessive movement can cause jumping out of gear on some cars. I have not had this happen with BMWs specifically though.

    Default Shift Forks

Check the linkage to make sure it isn't being blocked.
Nearly 100% that it is the shift forks.

Had the problem with my 318is, got a used trans from a junk yard, it poped out of different gears. Ended up rebuilding the original.

Found some good info on the Metric Mechanic site.
