master window switch panel

Anyone know how easy it is to replace the master power window switch found in the center console? Does the center panel have to to be opened up?

It's held in by friction, and just pops out. Easy.

flat screwdriver and a rag over it, and just pop it out. be gentle

you've got two connectors underneath, one for front windows, the other for back.

might be easier to pop out the flasher switch and then push up on the master switch from the bottom through the flasher switch opening.

If you remove the hazard flasher switch to take out the window switch bank, take care. When i did it as part of the procedure mentioned in "Coolant Leak rear of heater core..." that I've just posted, the top of the hazard switch pulled off in the spring inside went into orbit. It wa seasy to pry out the window switch bank, so I'd leave the hazard switch alone.

Luckly I had no problems. However, I have had several of my switches apart to replace bulbs and springs and little bb size balls are prevelant and a pain. German design seems overly picky and complex at times.

got a used one for sale if you don't want to pay fifty bucks on ebay...twenty bucks shipped .....Denny

just did it,my method is to simply pop out the panel that covers the shifter area. you gently pry up on the front left and right corners of the panel,then slide it forward and up.reach underneath and push the switch module out,its held by two spring loaded clips on either side.be really careful when you pry the connectors off cause they will be extreemly brittle.if they crack or break you can repair them with silicone rtv functionally good as new. bones,89 525i 246,000 miles.

I found it difficult to remove the wood console, but I found a technique where you can take a long 1/4" socket extension and poke it up from the side through a hole in the base. Then take a soft hammer and pop up the panel. The front side comes up first. Takes a little finagling...
