If it's made of stretchy diamond patterned plastic that slips off quite easily it's merely a transit protection and should definitely NOT be left on. Probably unlikely to do damage unless it melts into the filter and blocks it ......

I suspect it's there to hold the paper pleats in place and to protect the filter during manufacture/transit. Any other ideas anyone?

I have seen other filters like this in which it is intended to stay on. If you do not want to worry about it, buy Mann filters which come in a box and do not have the orange wrap. I got 4 of them from Drivewire for $44.48 delivered which is about the same as the guy on eBay gets with shipping.

I don't know what sort of filter you are speaking of, the ones pictured in the auction are intended for that covering to remain on.

Default I used the original equipment...

bought it from BMW themselves and took the paper off - surely this would rip and cause a blockage? The onei took out didn't have one on so i thought it would be ok?
