    Default Guage cluster

I'm pretty sure that my guage cluster is toast, so i went out to the junkyard and bought a used one, from a '92 525iA. It is a new board design but all my connectors plugged in. I have two questions about my new guage cluster...

how exactly do i put my original miles on the odometer?

    and

i get TRANS PROGRAM error on the display and the gear selection screen is a no show. it doesnt light up. So i drove my car around the block and i didnt feel that the gear selection has failed, it shifts as normal.

Kinda late, but you could probably fix your old one by soldering in new capacitors. Fairly easy.

I did, but the gas, temp, odometer, gear and check control dont work at all. along with turn signal lights and foglight guage light.

Early and late clusters are not interchangeable.

You need a gray or white backed cluster, not the blue backed.

really? i thought i read on BmWe34.net under dashboard that an older one could be replaced with a newer one but a new one cant be replaced with an older one. The one i got was a blue back, my old one was grey i believe. everything workrfs fime on the new cluster except the gear selection screen.

The coding plug is in the back of the circuit board on the later clusters while the early clusters have them in the harness plug. So you're stuck with whatever mileage is on the new cluster too.

Here a copy what I once posted in German and English:

    bis 2/89:
Altes Kombi (mit grauer Platte) mit dem Codierstecker im Kabelbaum.
built till 02/89: old cluster with grey back with code plug in cable loom

    2/89 bis 9/90:
    1. Redesign -> Kombi (mit weißer Platte) mit Codierstecker im Kombi.
2/89-9/90: 1st redesign, with white backplate with code plug in cluster

    ab 9/90:
    2. Redesign -> Kombi (mit blauer Platte) mit Codierstecker im Kombi.
from 9/90: 2nd redesign with blue backplate, code plug in cluster

In ein Fahrzeug bis 2/89 passen alle 3 Varianten.
Ab Bj 2/89 kannst Du nur Kombis mit dem 1. und 2. Redesign verwenden.
In a car till 2/89 all 3 cluster variants fit.
From built year 2/89 only cluster of 1st + 2nd redesign can be used.

Aber: Der Kodierstecker muß immer genau zur jeweiligen Design-Variante des Kombis passen. Das ist NICHT tauschbar !
But the code plug must always fit to the cluster design. They are not exchangable.
