    Default 5-speed conversion

i still havent gotten my car back yet but since the warranty company will be giving the mechanic some money i was wondering how much typically would the parts run me for a 5-speed swap? also does it just bolt right in? from what i have read the 5 and 6 speed gearboxes have identical ratios from 1-5 and 6th being overdrive.

there isnt really a manual swap writeup for the E34 anywhere.

Almost everything you need to know - and then some - in that thread.

Costs-wise, well - that's really up to you. I've got a sub 90k Getrag 250 5-speed, with the linkage, shifter, seals, and crossmember that I'll send your way for $275, or you can drop the major coinage on the 6 speed. You can get a driveshaft off of eBay (check 'Strictly German'), and you'll need a pedal cluster, as well as dozens of other little odds and ends (bolts, springs, washers, clutch hose, fluid lines, clips, plugs, grommets, etc) from the dealer. You'll also need a flywheel, pressure plate and clutch and the stock dual-mass flywheel is expensive when new. You can get a used one from a boneyard. You'll also want to change out the rear-end since you probably have a high-ratio back there for the automatic.

In short - you can expect to shell out probably close to $2k for the transmission and the associated bits and pieces to do it correctly with BMW parts. Less if you cut some corners and/or get lucky.
