Cassette deck malfunctioning?
When I have the casette adapter for my MP3 player in - it will play for an undetermined amount of time which is always random, but then the passenger side speakers won't work. They will just shut off, and the volume will be reduced a little.
With the radio all the speakers work just fine, and it works with the adapter for a while but it will just randomly shut off...
When it happens, I can only hear through the drivers side...
Once and a while I will get the "CLEAN" beep and message, but I have done it and it doesn't help. Do our radios chew up casette adapters or is it my deck?

Most likely your adapter is the cause of the problem. Its possible a channel on the tape section of your radio is going out. I would change that old radio out regardless. You will experience much better sound quality, output and functionality with a new radio.

In my car, the cassette player won't accept my tape adapter. Does it require a special tape adapter? My player just flips sides and then spits it out right away.

So how much for a new radio? I've got the old old old one with just a casette deck and radio - my car isn't even wired for the CD player.
Oh! ...and by new radio, do you mean the same model but not used, or a newer radio FOR the e34, or lastly - a whole new deck?

I got my alpine mp3 player in matching black for about 100 plus 30 dollar wire harness and free install at crutchfield, as I recall. The price has probably dropped since then. I don't know if my cassette radio ever worked, but I have gotten used to having 100 songs on a CD rather than 10, so it wasn't even a consideration. Took them 10 minutes to install and it sounds pretty good, even on my old ass speakers. I'm looking at bavsound.com for replacement speakers, but they seem to have a bit of confusion about what sizes are needed for this model. I guess I'll have to go to a shop that deal with bavsound and have them figure it out. But that's a separate topic.

screw CDs, it's gotta be either a direct 3.5mm headphone input, or a cassette adapter.
