Default Need to drain Coolant to R & R Heater Blower?

I have the expansion tank in front of the blower access and the Bently says to remove the hose from the tank . Is this presupposing you've drained the coolant or can you maybe clamp the hose, suction out the tank then remove it ? Only reason i ask is if i don't need to drain all the coolant i don't need to have the shop do it. Something tells me though the hose is really too big and stiff to clamp enough to avoid the gushing I'd want to avoid.

A cork in the hose and push the tank off to the side, probably won't loose much coolant.
