The list is much shorter if you're talking cars imported to the U.S. though many basic options were standard for the U.S. order deck.

what is this Protection Package I see?

The protection package was a series of items used when the car was being shipped overseas. This included (from what I can remember) the cosmoline spray that would protect against the sea salt, strut/spring stops, that were used to keep the suspension from being worn out from tossing at sea, covers that protected the wheels and films that would protect the finish. I'm sure there were other procedures they followed that protected the car during shipping. Once the car landed at the port of call or entry, they were supposed to be prepped to be shipped to the dealer. There are instances where the strut stops were overlooked and it even made it past the dealer, finally the customer pointed out the oversight. To make the point even further, some vehicles are cleaned of the cosmoline very well, (engine bay) and some of them look like they were never sprayed clean at all. On the bright side, if the cosmoline wasn't removed, you'll never have a problem with rust in that area. Too bad they didn't spray the bottom of the doors with that stuff...
