Is the odometer supose to work (light up) by pressing button on instrument cluster without the key in ignition? Again this is a '89.

I'm reasonably certain that function was added as an update shortly after the digital odometers were introduced in the '88 model year on the E32. It may not have gotten to the E34 for the first year, either. Yours may be acting as designed. I'm sure other '89 E34 owners will chime in.
